How To Think Clearly

Jan 09, 2024

Your mind dictates your actions.

Your actions dictate your life.

So what happens when your mind is clouded and you can’t think clearly?

You make bad decisions.

You take bad actions.

You don’t do the work that you know you need to do.

And if you do it, you can’t do it to a high enough quality to get the results you want to get.

You don’t rise to the level that’s required of you to achieve your goal.

Everything you do is clouded and influenced by poor rationality.

When you can’t think clearly, you can’t live fully.

Luckily, thinking clearly is a skill.

Some people are naturally good at it, but most “thinkers” have to work at it and build their skill level.

Something that’s never been harder than in today’s world thanks to endless stimulation and connection.

If you imagine clear thinking like walking through a wide open trail, each second you spend distracted, stimulated, or connected is a tree turning your walk through a field into a walk through the forest.

It’s much harder to see where you’re going or what you’re walking on.

It’s much harder to see clearly.

Of course, there’s always going to be some trees on your trail of thoughts, I don’t expect you or anyone to spend no time at all connected to the modern world.

But with how influential your thinking is, learning how to think clearly so you can make the best decisions and take the best actions with your best interests in mind, is crucial.

You’ll improve how well you know yourself, your results online, in business, or in your job, and your relationships.

In a world where nobody puts in the effort to think clearly, learning how will change your life.

How To Think Clearly:

Thinking clearly is a skill.

It’s an ability that you can improve upon with deliberate practice.

These 2 daily habits will help you more than anything else;

Writing

Writing is indistinguishable from thinking.

They are the exact same thing, the only difference being that writing is a more controlled version of thinking.

You’re forced to slow your thoughts down to match the speed of your writing and bring your thoughts together to create a cohesive, and often persuasive, piece.

Writing is the ultimate way to improve your thinking.

Not only does it improve your ability to move through the forest of your thoughts, but it improves your ability to cut down the trees and clear the path.

When you write you think better, whilst offloading thoughts that your mind was carrying onto paper.

How you decide to go about this habit is up to you.

You could journal (I would recommend a brain dump).

You could write a blog.

You could write content.

Or you could do all 3 or something entirely different.

The main thing is that you’re writing.

But, if you’re writing, you may as well build something based on that writing that will benefit you.

Whether that’s a blog, a newsletter, or content.

You’ll build something meaningful. You’ll open the door to opportunities. You’ll keep yourself accountable to writing. You’ll be forced to make yourself useful so that what you write about can provide value and make an impact.

Walking

“Walking is man’s best medicine”

- Hippocrates

Few things in the world have as many all-round benefits as walking.

From physical health to mental health to clarity, walking is one of the most essential habits for a well-lived life.

Our ancestors spent their entire lives walking, it wasn’t until recently that we stopped, it’s ingrained in our DNA to walk.

Most importantly, to walk in silence - disconnected from the stimulus of the world.

When you walk, without music or a podcast blaring in your ears, you spend time with nothing but your thoughts.

The movement, combined with being outside in a wide open space facilitates creativity whilst allowing you to think through your thoughts and sort them out.

Because that’s all you’re doing.

There’s no secret sauce here as to why walking helps you think more clearly.

It’s simply that it allows you to get outside and think.

And if you spend more time thinking, you’ll get better at THINKING.

Of course, you can, when thinking, consciously choose a problem you have or a topic you’re interested in and work through your thoughts in a coherent fashion to really dial in your ability to think clearly.

How much time you spend walking is up to you, ideally, you would spend as much time as you can.

But even a 10 minute walk will work wonders for your clarity and ability to think through thoughts.

I’m a big fan of 2 walks each day.

One walk in silence, thinking through my thoughts and solving any problems I might have.

One walk to learn, listening to an audiobook or podcast, and each time something strikes me and interests me, I will pause the content, note down my idea, and start working through the thought in my head.

If you can only do 1, opt for the walk in silence.

Could you do other things to help you think clearly?

Sure.

But these are fundamental.

If you want to think clearly and reap the benefits of thinking clearly, you need to;

  • Learn how to think coherently through writing

  • And spend more time thinking - which there’s no better way to do than on a walk.

Great ideas are forged in a chaotic mind calmed through writing.
