Logic or Psychology?

Jan 03, 2025

Think about the most pressing problem you have right now.

The one that’s weighing you down and keeping you up at night.

What is your plan to solve it?

First, if you have don’t have one, make one. ASAP.

Second, if you do have one, are you sure that that plan is going to work?

You see, unless you know what type of problem your problem is, your potential solution might not be the correct solution. It might not solve the problem.

What most people don’t realise is that every problem falls into 1 of 2 types.

A logic problem - you're ignoring data, eg. You’re using a sales page which converts lower than a standard KPI.

A psychology problem - you're holding yourself back, eg. You’re sabotaging your sales calls or avoiding a certain task.

Now, here’s where it gets tricky.

Every logic problem can be fixed by improving your psychology and how you think - after all, if you improve your psychology, your logical thinking will improve. But no psychology problem can be fixed with logic because your logic is underpinned by your psychology.

This doesn’t mean you should always revert to fixing your psychology (although it’s not strictly a bad idea), sometimes you really should just fix the logical fallacy in front of you.

But if you do have a psychology problem, you must fix your psychology - your perceptions, beliefs, mental models and way of thinking - to solve the problem.

As even if you attempt to use logic to fix the problem, and it works, it'll only work for a short period of time.

It'll only work until your psychology decides to sabotage you again.

The Trap We All Fall Into

However, we as humans have egos.

Our egos do not want us to be wrong, they do not want us to think we see the world in a way that holds us back and so we will often see every psychology problem as a logic problem.

You put off a task and think you just need another tool or hack to help you do it - not that you need to fix your self-respect and ability to overcome resistance

You go to bed doubting your ability to make it work and think you just need to get a result - not that you need to remove some limiting belief and learn to trust yourself.

As a result, you end up never fixing any of your psychology problems and you stay stuck where you are, despite attempting all these different solutions.

Every problem you have is because you’re doing something logically wrong (often through ignorance) or you’re sabotaging yourself thanks to mental blocks.

If it’s neither of these it’s likely not even a “problem”.

As if its neither, likely you can’t do anything to fix it, hence it’s not a problem - it is just the way the world is.

Logic problems are quick fixes. Psychology problems are life changing.

So any time you have a problem, ask yourself, “Is this a logic problem or a psychology problem?”
