Turn Your Creativity Into A Business (How To Monetise your mind)
Dec 29, 2023I know what you’re thinking
“But I’m not creative”
My friend, yes you are.
Every single human being on this planet is creative.
Think about it…
Creativity is simply combining old ideas in the back of your mind with new ideas to create something unique.
And that comes in so many different ways - writing, painting, photography, problem-solving.
So why don’t you think you’re creative?
Well, it’s likely down to 2 things;
-
You haven’t found the correct vehicle for your creativity
And to expand on that, maybe you need to revisit them all.
When I was in school, I used to hate writing, but now I love it - because I write about what interests me.
Don’t be afraid to explore.
-
You’ve listened to negative feedback
Since I hated writing in school, I never put much effort into it.
My exam grades weren’t that good and the feedback I got was that I was crap at writing.
If I had internalised that feedback, I would never have started writing online and I wouldn’t be where I am today.
So if you’ve ever gotten any sort of negative (non-constructive) feedback on your creative work - ignore it.
Don’t let it hold you back.
Because you are creative.
At every moment you’re taking on new ideas, combining them with old ones, and viewing the world from a unique and creative perspective.
Your creativity is the one thing nobody can replicate.
They can get close, and they can even copy, but they can’t replicate it with the same level of authenticity, meaning, and rawness that you can.
And that’s exactly why you should monetise your creativity.
In the business and employment world competition is high.
If you’re starting a business someone else will have one that does something similar.
If you’re applying for a job, 1000 other people will be applying for the same role.
Competition is everywhere - when you don’t lean into what makes you, you.
When you build a business around your creativity, curiosities and knowledge, competition is 0.
There’s no applying for jobs and fighting off other candidates, there’s no worrying about a competing business.
Because you’re able to provide unique value in a unique way that only you can provide.
It attracts clients and customers who like your style and philosophy - hence, there’s no competition.
When you monetise your creativity, when you monetise your mind, people will buy from you because it’s you.
Think about a fitness coach.
There are thousands of online coaches.
But why does someone buy from a particular coach?
-
The coach provides unique value in a unique way (lessons they’ve learned through their experience)
-
The coach provides social proof (through results and testimonials)
-
The coach builds a relationship with their followers (through sharing their story, their lessons and values)
All fitness coaches share relatively the same content.
It’s their creative way of sharing that content and building a relationship that gets people to LIKE THEM.
Because if they don’t like you and your philosophy, they’ll buy from the person they do like.
Luckily, everyone will attract different people.
There is no competition - so long as you lean into your unique creativity.
How To Monetise Your Creativity
A business needs 2 things;
-
Something to sell
-
Someone to sell it to
Let’s start with someone to sell it to.
Create Content You Would Consume
You need someone to sell your product or service to.
You need traffic.
The old ways of doing this involve a physical store or paid ads.
Both of these still work.
But why not get traffic for free, whilst building your reputation, trust, and social proof?
So create content and build your brand.
Which platform you choose is up to you, but see what other people in your “niche” are creating, model what’s working, and put your own creative spin on it, sharing your lessons and your experiences.
If you do this right, you could blow up with a few months on the right platforms, and have a massive amount of traffic that knows, likes, and trusts you.
The important part is that you create content that you would consume.
If you wouldn’t consume it, you shouldn’t post it.
Make Your Brand A Distillation Of Your Life
If you want to lean into your business being a creative outlet that attracts people who like you, you need to make it a distillation of your life.
In your content, you have to share lessons, failures, achievements, pivots, low points, and high points.
You have to become slightly philosophical and highly introspective so that you can look at the events of your life and extract lessons from them that will benefit other people.
It allows you to share unique lessons that eliminate competition.
It allows you to be authentic and attract people who like you.
It allows you to build a business from your life.
This is where most people go wrong.
They try to make their brand something they’re not.
They try to share lessons from things they haven’t done, attracting people who don’t actually like them and ultimately leading to them not being truly creative and running out of ideas to talk about.
Because when your brand is a distillation of you and you share things that you learn, you’ll never run out of ideas.
That is if you’re learning daily and building daily as you should be.
Share Solutions
If you follow the first 2 steps you’ll build an audience that knows, likes, trusts, and respects you.
They WANT to buy from you.
They’re just waiting for you to sell something valuable to them.
And this is the best part about making your brand a distillation of your life.
As you go through life and encounter problems, you’ll creatively find solutions that work for you.
You share this experience through your content, attracting people with the same problem.
You then package the solutions into a coaching program or course.
People buy, get an actionable, effective solution to their problem and you get paid.
Everyone wins.
You then continue to grow your audience, create better content, solve bigger problems, and repeat.
You’ve monetised your creativity.
Now, these are massively simplified versions and an overview of each step.
