How To Build Your Digital Net Worth (Become A Digital Millionaire)
Dec 05, 2023Everyone has a digital net worth.
You. Your friends. Your boss. Your grandma.
But some people are digital millionaires and others are digitally bankrupt.
We live in a society where your digital net worth determines a lot of your social standing, opportunities, and quality of life (and will do even more so in the future).
Those who are digitally bankrupt ruin their digital net worth with photos of their recent weekend degeneracy, memes, and sitting on the sidelines.
Those who are digital millionaires build their digital net worth through content, branding, and impact.
Even those who don’t post on social media, don’t engage with or share anything on social media have a digital net worth, because your digital net worth is based on how you use your social media and brand.
Which everyone has.
Just by being on social media, you have a brand.
A brand that potential employers, potential partners, and potential clients judge you by.
And ultimately, it’s determined by the impact you make and the message you send - which downstream leads to income.
If you don’t post, you’re sending a particular message to anyone who views your profile.
If you post pictures of you at the bar on the weekend, you’re sending a particular message to anyone who views your profile.
If you post content designed to improve people’s lives in whatever way you decide to do that, you’re sending a particular message to anyone who views your profile.
The question is this;
How do you want people to perceive you online?
A negative or even non-existent perception will limit your future opportunities, future income and make you digitally bankrupt.
A positive perception will expand your future opportunities, future income and potentially make you a digital millionaire.
The world is no longer about whether or not you should be on social media.
It’s now about how you use social media.
Why Worry About Your Digital Net Worth:
The future of work is online
The world is moving more and more online.
And with that, so is the future of work.
From freelancing, to content creators, to agency owners, to fashion brands to remote work.
Everything is pushing the working economy to be more streamlined and digital.
Your presence online will massively dictate how successful you’ll be in the world of online work.
Potential employers, clients, or anybody will look you up.
If you post pictures of you partying every weekend, it instantly puts you on the back foot.
You’re giving a negative impression, making a negative impact, and negatively affecting your digital net worth.
But if you post content around a certain skillset you have, displaying your expertise, experience, and knowledge, you make a positive impression, a positive impact and positively affect your digital net worth.
A potential employer or client is much more likely to work with you than someone displaying their degeneracy or displaying nothing at all.
If you don’t consciously build it, you’re mindlessly ruining it
A lot of people think posting nothing is an acceptable option.
But in terms of opportunities and income, it’s just as bad as posting what the average person posts right now.
To get more and better opportunities online in terms of income, network, or anything else, you have to make an impact.
You have to show your competency and skillset.
By posting nothing, you’re not making an impact.
You’re leaving everything open to the imagination - and people will assume the worst.
If you don’t consciously build your digital net worth, you’re mindlessly ruining it.
Build a vehicle that lets you live life on your terms
The internet allows you to work from anywhere in the world on your own schedule.
By building your digital net worth you’re building a vehicle that gives you the opportunities to live life on your terms.
Whether you want to pursue a career or start a business.
Having a profile that makes a positive impact, acting as the ultimate CV, is the best way to do that.
You curate your brand online, which remember everyone has, around the goals you have.
You facilitate the attraction of what you want by what you post.
Meaning if you want to start an online fitness coaching business, you post impactful, valuable content around the goals and problems your potential clients would have, attracting them to you, giving you the opportunity to sign clients, build your business and live life how you want to live it.
How To Become A Digital Millionaire
Your digital net worth is determined by the impact you make.
So to become a digital millionaire, you have to make a massive impact.
Luckily, because of the nature of the internet, you already have massive leverage and the ability to make that impact if you know how and you give it enough time.
You can post 1 piece of content and if you’ve got all the right ingredients, reach millions of people, making a massive impact.
Create Content Around Your Curiosities and Life
The most common objection I hear to creating content and growing online is this;
“My niche is saturated”
I always have the same 2 responses;
-
People say this every year, yet every year people grow
90% of the people in your “niche” will quit in the next 3-12 months.
Simply by playing the long game and outlasting them, your chances of success skyrocket, and your ability to grow, build authority, and make an impact increases.
You will grow if you learn how to play the game correctly (which most people never do - hence why they quit)
-
You shouldn’t be in a niche
Yes, you shouldn’t be in a niche.
A typical niche is nothing but a box that limits what you can talk about and dampens your personality.
You are not 1 dimensional. You are not just interested in 1 thing.
And neither is anybody else.
The idea that your personal brand should be solely focused on 1 thing is ridiculous.
It makes you 1 dimensional and people will struggle to relate to you.
Instead, you should create content around your curiosities and your life.
This way you create a niche of 1.
When you combine what you’re interested in and the experiences of your life - which are unique to you - you enter a field of 0 competition.
People will start to follow you for you, not because of your niche.
Which in the long run is the much better option.
If you decide to niche yourself into fitness, if in 5 years time you’re fed up talking about fitness, you’ll struggle to pivot because everyone is following you solely for fitness content and not for you.
But if you create a niche of 1, in which you can talk about fitness as well as any other interest you have, you can pivot with your interests as they change - which they inevitably will.
And since you’re creating content around what genuinely interests you, your curiosities, you’ll be able to make the most impact of impact.
You’re passionate.
You’re excited to learn, experience, and build.
You’ll have lessons to share.
You’ll have value to provide and you’ll make an impact.
You are the niche.
Prioritise Impact
Impact is the digital currency.
The more impact you make, the higher your digital net worth and if you’re willing to learn how to monetise correctly, downstream of impact, comes income.
Impact is a combination of sharing value and holding attention.
The more value you share and the longer you hold someone’s attention for (collectively, over time), the more impact you make.
To share value you have to create content (around your curiosities) that does 1 of 3 things;
-
Causes a perspective change
You change the way someone looks at the world for the better
-
Solves a painful problem
You give them a solution to a problem that’s negatively impacting their life
-
Achieves a meaningful goal
You help them make progress towards something they want to achieve
If you do a combination of those 3 things through your content, you’ll make an impact.
And the longer you can hold someones attention, either through;
-
A high quantity of short-form content on the likes of Twitter/Instagram or
-
A lower quantity of long-form content on the likes of YouTube/newsletters/podcasts or
-
A combination of short form and long form content, the more impact you’ll make.
With more impact comes more trust, more authority, more respect, a higher digital net worth, and the potential for a higher income.
Impact is crucial.
If you don’t make a positive impact, you don’t build your digital net worth.
You don’t get opportunities.
You don’t make an income.
You stay digitally broke.
You need to make a positive impact.
Share lessons that you learn as you explore your curiosities in the form of content.
Learn human psychology and copywriting so that you can learn how to grab attention and keep people reading so that you can deliver your value and make the impact you want and need to make.
Pursuing All You Could Be
Your brand, your digital net worth, and the impact you make are nothing but a reflection of you.
If your brand isn’t where you want it to be, there’s an aspect of you that needs to be improved.
If you’re not growing, you need to improve the ideas you generate, your networking skills, and your writing ability.
If you’re not earning, you need to improve your sales and marketing skills and the impact you make with your free content.
With your digital identity, to improve, you must improve.
And we as humans are goal-orientated creatures.
You always have goals, you just might not have chosen those goals consciously.
We’re driven for progress, always wanting to improve.
With your brand, it will never be at the level you want it to be.
Each time you hit a milestone in terms of income, impact, or audience size, you’ll set your sights on the next mountain.
But to get to the top of that mountain you’ll need to improve your brand, which means you need to improve yourself.
With this being a constant cycle, you need to be in pursuit of all you could be.
You need to be consciously trying to improve each area of your life so that your brand will also improve.
If you don’t pursue all you could be, your brand will stagnate.
You’ll stop growing.
You’ll stop earning.
As you improve, so will your brand, the impact you make, your income, and your digital net worth.
Consistent Persistence
This isn’t an overnight process.
You’re not going to post content today and blow up tomorrow.
Content creation is a skill and viral content that blows up requires a high level of skill.
So to “blow up overnight” you have to put in the reps, learn the game of social media, and build the skill of content creation.
It takes time.
It takes reps.
It takes consistency.
And you’ll want to quit.
You’ll not get the results you want to get.
That’s fine.
That’s normal.
You should be setting goals that you’re not sure you’ll achieve that way even if you do miss them, you’ll land higher than what you would’ve initially expected.
The best part about this digital game we’re all playing is that everyone can make it.
Not everyone does, but everyone can.
The difference is whether you quit or you commit to learning, exploring, failing, repeating and eventually succeeding.
The game is wide open.
The opportunity has never been greater.
And the time will pass either way.
You can either start now and change your life within 12 months or you can wait because of whatever excuse you have and regret not starting sooner.
Like I said, the time will pass either way.
