I’ve always wanted to live a fulfilled life.
One full of freedom, progress, and autonomy.
Why?
I’m not 100% sure, but I imagine a lot of it can be traced back to 2 things;
-
I understood we only have 1 life on this planet and I don’t want to waste it
-
I have a massive craving for status and a life on my terms is just another way to get it
That 2nd reason might seem superficial.
But everything you do is linked to survival and status.
Everything.
It’s why you want a good job with a good income, the smoke show wife (or husband for the women reading), a nice car, the Rolex, and even freedom.
But there’s a problem with linking your level of happiness and fulfillment to status.
And I think this quote from Naval explains it perfectly;
“If you can’t be happy with a coffee, you won’t be happy with a yacht”.
As much as we desire status, mainly through materialistic items, these things themselves won’t make us happy or fulfilled.
Even for us creators, how many likes you get or how fast you’re growing - neither of these will make you happy or fulfilled
This isn’t me saying wanting more likes and followers or buying a nice car or a nice watch is bad, it’s not.
I drive a nice car and I’m a fan of nice watches.
But they themselves or the status you build from acquiring them won’t make you happy.
In fact, status acquired through any means won’t make you happier or more fulfilled.
So stop thinking you’ll be happy when you get x.
You won’t be.
Happiness and fulfillment are found in what you’re doing, not in what you acquire.
When I read that Naval quote a while back, it opened my eyes.
It changed my perspective on fulfillment.
It sent me on a rabbit hole to figure out what habits I could build NOW to be more fulfilled, here’s what helped me find fulfillment in my day-to-day life;
Habit 1: Self-discovery
You won’t find fulfillment in doing what you think other people want you to do.
You MUST follow what grabs you, what interests and compels you.
Find it.
It might be easy, it might not.
Regardless, consciously look for when you’re most engaged, interested, and focused - whatever it is that pulls you in, follow it daily.
Habit 2: Set a goal and build something meaningful
“Focus on the journey, not the destination” has been misunderstood.
It doesn’t mean that you disregard goals and forget about them.
You need goals.
They provide direction and give meaning to the process.
So set a goal related to what grabs you and then do something every single day to chase it.
If you’re not a fan of the traditional path and want to start your own business, I would recommend starting a creator business.
I go over how you can do that here.
Humans are progress and goal-orientated creatures.
We need goals.
Habit 3: Do something every single that that you enjoy
I’m a massive fan of coffee.
The caffeine, the taste, the process.
I love it all.
So I make and drink a cup every single day.
It’s like a mini ritual.
And sure, it only takes 5 minutes to make it but fuck do I love doing it.
This might seem stupid and small to you, but to me it’s massive.
You see, it’s easy to glamorise the big moments in life - but they don’t happen often.
Small moments, where the sun shines through the window onto your face as you sit at your desk, happen all the time yet never get appreciated.
If you want to find fulfillment in your everyday life, find something small that you love to do and glamorise the fuck out of it.
Habit 4: Creating
Creating has changed my life more than any other habit.
It’s provided me with more fulfillment than anything else.
Why?
Well, it combines all 3 of the other habits.
It forces you to find what grabs you, dive deep into its depths, learn about it, practice it, get good at it, and then share what you learn.
It gives you a vehicle that is incredibly easy to set goals for - whether it’s follower or income-related.
It forces you to get good at storytelling and storytelling is all about the small moments. You have to recognise them, capture them and share them.
